A significant theological shift occurs when we move
from imagining an external deity to imagining mysterious creative reality of
the Divine, being embedded in everything that exists. This new understanding of
the Divine makes many aspects of the old theology problematic.
A new theology will tell the scientific story of our beginnings in the
explosion of a giant star and that every atom in our bodies comes from stardust
formed in that explosion. We are stardust and we also give human expression to
the great mystery that sustains and holds everything in existence.
This new theology will give a new explanations of Jesus reaffirming God’s
present everywhere and in all people. Jesus paid the price for attempting to
empower people, so they might question attitudes which blocks them from seeing
the ‘kingdom of God.’ So, in this new understanding Jesus is not a god-figure
essentially different from the rest of us.
We also need to look at how this new way of wisdom and insight is understood as
revealing the Divine. Revelation as being embedded in speakers and writers –
not coming from outside or coming down to them from heaven – rather the Divine
is embedded in humans.
