Scientists estimate that there are in our universe
of 200 billion galaxies, each containing 200 billion stars. All these galaxies
are hurling outwards through space at unimaginable speed. Our own Milky Way
galaxy, in the grand scheme, is like a speck of dust in comparison to the size
of the universe. Wow! And you think you know what the Creator is!
The old, but still predominate, Christian understanding of God and its theology
were shaped in a worldview that was pre-scientific and extremely outdated. The
old image of a heavenly deity who is disconnected from humanity and who sent
his son from heaven to redeem us so we can go to heaven is no longer credible.
The time for such theological thinking is over. It makes no sense any more. We
need a new theology will take into account the mind-blowing knowledge of the
ever-expanding universe. We need a concept of the divine which is present in
everything and lovingly embracing it. We not only need to change our
understanding of God, but also the theology that surrounds and supports the old
understanding of God.
