Christian tradition and contemporary Society
Looking back on my life, I would describe myself as a conservative Christian
turned radical. My perspective has changed from a more traditional
understanding of the role of Christian action to a radical understanding of
Christian action in society.
I came to this realization because ‘truth’ is much larger than any religion or
theology. I escaped from the coercive and heavily creedal and structural
uniformity traditionally demanded by the churches. I became free from forms of
literalism in the Bible that diminish human life. While respecting the
traditions I am not enslaved my them. I was free to live the way of Jesus. I
became free to recapture the radical social implications of a way of life
embodied in Jesus.
Older traditions that no longer serve human flourishing need to be reshaped or
radical altered. Life-giving convictions held in these traditions need to be
presented in thought-forms that response to the needs of contemporary society.
It’s not a case of either/or. While seeking a way of life taught by Jesus, I
live in conversation with the world. Both are important.
