According to Thomas Kuhn, a paradigm shift occurs
when we look at a culture from a new window. New paradigm emerges when enough
people challenge existing beliefs systems. While such changes can occur
naturally through the evolution of ideas, a paradigm shift occurs when the
anomalies become too great and we need to reexam our biblical roots.
Traditional beliefs, are not spelled out in the Bible, but are theological
systems shaped by humans in order to formulate a unified Divine plan of
salvation. All the concepts of salvation, from Adam and Eve’s disobedience to
Jesus’ act of redemption, are like building blocks based on an elsewhere God.
Once the foundation block is removed the whole structure falls apart.
We first need to reimagine the Sacred as immanent in life. Second, free the
Spirit from human created bonds, such as developing a positive view of humanity
or a positive anthropology of original sin, dismantle theories of atonement,
and develop a new Christology. Nothing short of a ‘reformation’ that dares to
challenge the elsewhere notion of God and Jesus of Nazareth as the Son of God
is needed. The surprise is that this reformation has already started.
