Our senses tell us that the sun and the stars, move
around the earth. Even though we know this not to be true, our daily speech
reveals this ancient belief when we say, “the sun rises in the East and sets in
the West”.
Yet, we know that we are all passengers on planet earth, traveling at three
different ways simultaneously. The earth spins around her axis at the speed of
1000 miles per hours at the equator which takes 24 hours, and which gives our
days and nights. While the earth spins around her axis, we move around the sun
travelling at the speed of 67,000 miles per hour. This second journey of 600
million miles takes us 365 days to complete and gives us our four seasons.
Finally, the earth as a member of the solar system (sun and nine planets) is
travelling outwards in to space at 43,000 miles an hour. While all this data is
approximate, with regards to speed, time and distance, this threefold movement
of our planet raises our awareness of the mystery of the creator and creates in
us a sense of awe and wonder.
