We can be thankful that the church has preserved,
remembered and focused our attention on the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. The
people who followed Jesus’ teaching have fed and clothed the poor, affirmed the
equality of women and men, have spoked publicly against the use of war to
resolve conflict and have revealed a loving God who welcomes repentant with
open arms. These teachings are the vision of a God-soaked human being.
In contrast, the church has also put forward the doctrine of the divine Christ,
which has compromised the Christion response to Jesus. In the name of Christ,
the church has supported its own clergy as worthy of protection than the bodies
and innocence of children, has treated women as naturally inferior and subject
to men, has been silent about racism.
Don’t we need to lift from Jesus the name ‘Christ’ while he was on earth?
Remember, we need to recognize Jesus as being human like us, before he became
divine. It’s a case of both/and rather than either/or. The pre-Easter Jesus
became the post-Easter Christ.
