There is an omnipotent God, who could prevent
suffering, but doesn’t. There is the God who set the universe going in the
first place, and who sits back and doesn’t interfere. There is the God of the
gaps that fills the gaps left by science. There is the cosmic bellhop, who
answers all our prayers. There is the God who demands sacrifice. There is the
God of judgment who rules by fear. How do you define God?
Do you see God simply as love? Or is she/it a female or genderless version?
But isn’t God a mystery, completely beyond human imaginations. Some use the
terminology G-O-D to avoid any image of the divine – using G-O-D to signify
something more.
Where is your God? If you say we are on a journey ‘to’ God, then your God is a
supernatural being who lives elsewhere. If you say that you are on a journey
‘in’ and even ‘of’ God then he/she/it is everywhere. What matters is that you
are liberated enough to express what you mean by God, and not leave it to the
ecclesiastical authorities to make up your mind.
